Kung Fu Dunk
I enjoyed Shaolin Soccer, and I like Jay Chou (周杰伦), so I’m really looking forward to more mindless fun from Kung Fu Dunk (大灌篮):
A film by Stephen Chow (周星驰), of course. [Sina page]
UPDATE: The film is not by Stephen Chow at all. It’s by Zhu Yanping (朱延平). Sorry about that. Now it looks like a pretty shameless ripoff. (Thanks to commenter Ken for pointing out that error.)
Looking forward to this one. But I have to point out, even though Kung Fu Dunk resembles Shaolin Soccer, I don’t think Stephen Chow is involved in this movie.
When will it be out?
Thanks, Ken. I fixed the error.
Man, this is going to be the Chinese movie of the year 2008. And it’s really a pity that Stephen Chow is not involved.
It’s Kevin Chu Yen-ping (his chosen western spelling) doing his latest cash-in. His films are mostly, uniformly dumb but immensely, shamelessly entertaining.
Try catching his WILD GEESE/LA FEMME NAKITA/PAPILLON/BIRD MAN OF ALCATRAZ/BAD BOYS (the Sean Penn one – the good one, not the Will Smith turd) knock off ISLAND OF FIRE (aka THE PRISONER). Chu – a Taiwanese who mostly works out of Singapore these days – has a long, storied career of no-budget, low-budget and knock off fun. REQUITAL is also a gem, liberally ripping of GOODFELLAS. HUNTING LIST may have been a first, as the film was released before TRUE ROMANCE and the film’s action conclusion was subsequently ripped off by Tony Scott/Quentin Tarantino.
Chu also helped make David Tao Da-wei (Sr.), the late comedian Hsi Bu-liao, 80s child star Siu Bin-bin, and 90s child star Hao Siao-wen icons in Taiwan.
Eric Tsang Chi-wai (whom Jack Nicholson imitated for the INFERNAL AFFAIRS remake, TEH DEPARTED) also stars in KUNG FU DUNK.
a copy-cat movie. almost the same story-line with the Shaolin Soccer. nothing special
